European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards in Spain

Hispania Nostra is the association representing Europa Nostra in Spain and with which it shares objectives regarding the cultural and natural heritage.

In 1978, Europa Nostra, the organization leading the citizens’ movement in Europe for the protection, diffusion and enjoyment of its cultural and natural heritage, created the annual awards recognising exceptional initiatives in conservation of the heritage, both public and private. What began as a system of recognition by a European NGO, in 2002 became the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards, launched by the European Commission and managed by Europa Nostra.

On this web Hispania Nostra presents all the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards obtained by Spain, which remains the country that has received most of these European awards up to the present moment.

The web contains ample information on the Spanish cultural features that have received these awards, so revealing Spain’s wealth of heritage and the evolution of the concept of heritage since the first awards in 1978, when mainly buildings were recognised, to the diverse types of the present ones and the incorporation of the natural heritage.
