ART-RISK. Artificial intelligence applied to the preventive restoration of heritage buildings

Reason for the award :

The jury praised an innovative approach to introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods into a standardized, quality-controlled tool for risk analysis and decision-making in the field of preventive conservation.

The software has been tested in Seville, Cádiz, and Granada, and as an internationalization line in Colombia, Peru, the United Kingdom, Cuba, and Chile.

ART- RISK is an interdisciplinary project made up of chemists, architects, archaeologists, curators, restorers, historians, geologists, biologists, mathematicians, and computer scientists. Its objective is the protection and conservation of the architectural historical heritage through the development and use of artificial intelligence models. The results are three working methodologies, ART-RISK 1, ART-RISK 2, ART-RISK 3, and a registered free-use software, ART-RISK 3.0. This programme makes it possible to establish predictions based on multi-scenario analysis, including environmental risk assessment and architectural, cultural, urban, and even socio-demographic assessments, based on scientific criteria, thus minimizing the risk of losses.

The results make it possible to classify needs and emergencies in terms of risk, which allows sustainable management and minimizes costs for emergency rehabilitation. The software includes a geographic information system (GIS) for the whole of Spain with seismic, geotechnical, flooding, and environmental risks and also evaluates the fire load of buildings for decision-making. In future versions, the risk of fires could be analyzed to minimize the possibility of a fire such as the one that occurred at Notre Dame de Paris.
